The Bugatti Chiron's US-Spec Bumper Is Moderately Upsetting
As you can see from the image above, the rear end of the Bugatti Chiron is quite a sight to behold. With vast mesh expanses, lashings of carbonfibre and one gigantic light bar, it gives the Chrion’s bum a striking aesthetic. An aesthetic which is enhanced with two massive lumps of rubber on US-spec cars.
As revealed by the Chiron on display at the New York Auto Show, US-spec cars will have these wretched carbunkles attached due to US federal bumper regulations. Cars like the Lamborghini Countach and various iterations of the Porsche 911 famously received a similarly nasty exterior treatment due to the rules, which are intended to avert damage during low speed accidents.
Thankfully, the rubber blocks should be fairly easy to remove as it looks like they’re held on by a handful of exposed screws (no doubt a very deliberate decision), so expect every single US Chiron owner to bin the protectors immediately after delivery…

Actually these are just two giant key fobs that must be inserted into the rear bumper to unlock full power and hit the top speed. Similar to having two nuclear launch keys.

That’s exactly the reason why I wouldn’t buy a European car in the US. And I won’t buy an American car in Europe. Most American cars are designed for the NA market (of course, there are exceptions, like the Ford Fiesta) and most European cars are designed for EU markets (with exceptions as well).
And it’s not just that they make the car to the taste of the market they are in (e.g. American cars tend to be bigger), but also because when they develop a car, they mainly consider the local legislation.
And so when the car eventually gets exported over the pond (or a production line is launched), they have to make almost last-minute alterations to make their product compliant with the regulations.
For example, European cars sold in the US get the nasty looking amber reflectors (when a car is initially designed for the US, they keep in mind the regulations and so the reflectors don’t look like an after-thought).
Or when American cars are sold in the EU they have to get bigger mirrors or even de-tuned engines (like the UK-spec Mustang, which also didn’t get the beautiful running lights) and other alterations.
The Chiron is, of course, the worst example and thankfully those things can be removed… But to me, it’s another reminder that if you want to get most car for your money, buy the one which was designed on the same continent.
Of course all of the above is just my personal opinion and, as I said, every rule has its own exceptions

The reason why the RHD 2015+ Mustangs have 5 less hp is because the right exhaust manifold had to be reshaped to clear the steering rack. It wasn’t an intentional power loss
