RANT: BMW's 3GT Spoiler Is Ridiculous

Ollie's in one of those moods again, which means he's about to let rip. Cover your ears, children...

It's rant time again. I've had a pop at fake vents and grilles, and er, vented my displeasure at the modding culture. And now, I'm not very happy with this:

What you're looking at, my friend, is an active rear spoiler. It belongs to a BMW. An Ultimate Driving Machine. It is the first ever Beemer to get active body aero. And what does this cool party piece belong to?

Yep. A bloody 3-series Gran Turismo. The ugliest, least desirable member of the Three family, and the second most evil BMW, after the 5GT. Yeah, I'd even have a BMW X6 over that heap (though I'd prefer a 530d Touring if it's your round.)

There's no way the 3GT has such poor aero at high speed that it needs a pop-up wing. BMW has done the maths for us: the wing pops up at 68mph. While it's hanging around up there, it cuts rear axle lift by 35 per cent. But of course, the 3GT doesn't actually depend on the wing to stop it spinning off into a ditch. What if it broke? Would BMW put the car on sale knowing the wing was essential to driver safety? 'Course not.

It's a toy, a top trump. And since it'll need to be lifted when still for washing and maintenance, there'll have to be a pose button somewhere. So pricks can flip their wing around town. Bah.

If you're going to pose around with your aero hanging out, at least do it right. The Porsche Panamera is seriously frumpy, but it does boast this beautifully over-engineered wing...
