This 1966 912 has a fantastic history. Stolen in early 1967, it was stripped of its engine and left as scrap. Seeing an opportunity, factory Toyota endurance driver Dennis Aase purchased the Porsche and planned to take it racing. He replaced the missing four-cylinder motor with a period 911 engine and took to the track where he experienced some success racing in the Sports Car Club of America B-Production championship.

After the 1967 season, Aase sold the car as a rolling chassis to amateur racer Rod Simpson. Rod, who couldn’t afford a new 911 motor, decided it would make better financial sense to shoehorn a Chevrolet V8 into the back. The first iteration of the car was completed less than a year later in 1968, and attracted an instant fanbase. It was featured in numerous articles of the time and was supposedly the world’s first V8-swapped Porsche.

The original Z28 302 was later replaced with a Dodge Dart 400ci V8 which remains in the car to this day. The engine is supposedly producing around 600bhp in its current setup and the original 912 transaxle has been completely rebuilt to handle the increase in power. The car has only been driven 300 miles since the engine was installed, so we’d be keen to see how reliable this 912 actually is.

The list of modifications is seemingly endless as the car was tweaked and honed over the years. It features racing Recaro seats, a Momo steering wheel, speedline wheels and an enormous Corvette radiator to keep that V8 nice and cool. And to keep everything in check, the car features Bilstein shocks and 911 brakes.

Granted, this is certainly not a 912 for the Porsche purist. But it would make a fantastic project car and is almost worth buying for the history alone. What do you think CTzens?

Sure, it’s ok if you want a 911 which was turned into Chevy Corvair.

I wonder who came up with this idea. If I’d have the money I’d buy it just to make it right. Pull out the V8 and put in engine from Porsche 964 or 993.

That sort of defeats the purpose of the car…
