5 Cheap cars to buy as a 1st car and tune to amazingness!
For this list i went on local 2nd hand car websites (kapaza and 2dehands in Belgium) and had a look at some cheap cars you could buy as a first car and modify later.
The price gets higher the further we get into the list.
If i spell anything wrong, don’t bite my nose off, my 1st language is Dutch, not English.
Also, i’m not an expert, just a 16 y/o doing some research.
1: Audi 80 B3/B4, €400-800
They’re cheap, they’re old and they’re built as solid as a German car should be.
An Audi 80 can be bought for as little as 350 euros sometimes, and you get a manual and a 1.8L i4 petrol engine with that.
Unfortunately, the 1.8 only makes 90 hp so it’s a bit gutless but that’s no problem that can’t be fixed with a cheap used turbo, and the car is light too, weighing below 1100 KG (a miata na weighs 950)
It also has 4 doors and is pretty safe so your parents will approve too!
Now, some new wheels, a set of coils and a small turbo and you’re good to go on the ‘ring and slap
some lap times! 1100 KG = 2400 lbs
2: BMW E36 318i: €500-1000
The E36: cheap, easy to find and very happy to be tuned.
With the E36 you also get a 1.8L i4 petrol and a manual, but the engine is quite a bit better and makes 115 HP.
It tips the scale at about 1200 KG, which is still pretty damn good! (only 250 more than the praised miata NA)
For racing or drifting it’s also perfect, because it has a near perfect 50/50 weight balance!
Just like with the Audi, you could get a set of wheels, coils and a cheap used turbo and be flying around the ‘ring in no time!
3: Mazda MX5 NB: €2000-3000
No, it’s not the praised mk1 miata, but it’s close, and still a very cornerhappy little thing.
Daily useability: not great, but it’s possible to use as a daily.
Fun: great
potential: the sky
‘nuff said.
4: Mazda RX-7 SA (mk1), FB (mk2) or FC (mk3): €2000-4000
If you’re like me, you’ll agree that the 1st three generations of RX7 looked the best.
It might lack some power and get terrible mileage but you’d be brap’ing across town in an RX7, what’s not to love about that! They have a lot of potential, they’re light and look and sound great. The only thing holding me back is the terrible fuel economy and emmissions. (Unlike many petrolheads, i actually kind of care about the environment.)
Of course you could always swap a regular piston engine in it, but that would be blasphemi.
5: BMW Z3: €3000-4000
The Z3: one of the best looking BMW’s in my opinion and it doesn’t cost that much either! (maybe a little much for young people with a low paying job tho)
The cheapest variant is the 1.9L i4, which already pushes out a pretty good 140 horses, which is pretty good because it weighs below 1200 KG. (2600 lbs)
Like many BMW engines, it’s over-engineered and solid as a brick!
With some boost, you could probably get this up to 350+ hp on stock internals which would make the car do great drifts or solid lap times!
Comments
Nice, good solid points and actual research. I see a lot of people here who do lists but don’t say why the car is a good choice etc.
Btw I found this useful as I am 16 and thinking about the issue of first car, I completely agree with your choices.
Well thanks, and I’ll probably make more lists in the future!
Nice!!
Thanks!
Love the Z3👌🏼
If this is for people in the UK as a young person you would not be able to drive any of these cars legally. Unless you want to spend £10000 on insurance and have a tracker fitted so if you go 1mph over the speed limit or turn too hard you will get your insurance cancelled. It’s funny because it’s true
Really? That’s stupid!
I think you put a e46 picture for e36
Or maybe it is the front bumper
