1973 Datsun 240z
My 1973 Datsun 240z is my first car, and a car that I will never sell. This is the 240z that was featured right here on Car Throttle when I had just purchased it. That was about three years ago, and at that time the car was mostly stock, save for an exhaust and different carburetor setup. After a lot of hard work and time that I have personally put into the car, it has reached its current state. Since the Readers’ Rides article, I have done my best to get the car to be a good performer on both the street and the track. The old wheels and tires (70 profile!) have been replaced with 225-50r15 tires on 15x9 inch wheel at all four corners. This is the absolute widest setup possible on a non-flared z-car. The car has been lowered on a set of Vogtland lowering springs and Stagg Stage 2 shocks. The biggest upgrades have happened more recently (Summer of 2015) and are in the drivetrain department. The entire drive train of the car was ripped out with the help of my father in our driveway. With the engine bay cleared, I took the time to sand it down, primer it, and do four coats of GM Spatter Paint (black paint with blue and white flecks in it) with 3 coats of clear on top. I took the original numbers matching l24 straight six and sanded down the block before repainting it in the original Datsun Blue engine block paint color. The rest of the engine was also repainted in silver with the valve cover being painted in a wrinkle coat black. I decided to ditch the original four-speed (3,000+rpm at 60mph was becoming a bit of a headache) and I put a 280z five-speed in its place. I also swapped out the R180 rear differential that is known for being a weak point in the 240z drivetrain with an R200 rear differential (also from a 280z). It was a lot of work, but was definitely worth it. There’s definitely something coming soon in the engine department though. Here are a few hints. It will still be an L-series 6 cylinder, just with a lot more displacement and pushing out over 300hp.

That is a beautiful car! Probably one of my favorite 240zs!
Thank you. I saw your ‘76 Fiat project. Good luck with it!
Amazing car. That is one of my all time favorite cars. I’m glad to see a car like that in the hands of someone who truly appreciates it. One day I will have one, but not yet. Until then, I will continue to drool over beautiful examples like yours.
Thanks a lot. When you do decided to buy one at some point, whatever it is just make sure it’s as rust free as possible. On all of the Z’s, the mechanical stuff is generally simple, but the rust can be a real pain! This pretty much sums it up.
Is there an L28ET in your future? That’s what a friend of mine is doing with his S30.
Thank you for not cutting her up :) I’m really not a fan of fender flares unless it’s all integrated and stuff. I’m actually going to be putting the same wheels and same size tires on my s130.
bore to 3.1 and twin turbo?
You were very close, but no turbos. It is an N/A 3.1 liter stroker that was built by a friend of mine that puts out 312hp. He no longer needs the engine (he has moved on from racing to restoring a numbers matching 240z from the first month of production) so he decided to give me a deal on the engine that I couldn’t pass up.
