Why Is There An Engraving Of An Elephant On This BMW Circuit Board?

As you can see, there’s a happy-looking elephant holding a BMW logo in its trunk. But why the hell is it there? Some commentors in this Reddit thread seem to think that the picture is an inside joke. Apparently, board designers often do this for strange kicks.

But why an elephant? Thoughts?
