Volkswagen will mark the 40th anniversary of the Scirocco with a massive update to the model's range. The sleek hatchback is getting a bunch of power upgrades as well as a nip and tuck to its exterior.

Under the hood you still get a choice between petrol and diesel engines, but with more power and improved efficiency. All the engines get turbos, from the entry level 1.4-litre petrol which makes 123bhp all the way up to the range-topping Scirocco R's 2.0-litre unit. The latter now makes 276bhp, up 15bhp from before.

On the oil-burning dark side, there's a choice of two 2.0-litre turbo diesel engines, with both 148bhp and 182bhp units offering economy of up to 68.9mpg.

The Scirocco was always a fine looking thing, but it's had a little bit of work done to keep things fresh. There are new headlights above a revised bumper, which has blades housing the daytime running lights and fog lights. All models get LED rear lights and a rear bumper that has been reshaped to appear lower.

The Scirocco R stands out thanks to bespoke bumpers and the same 18-inch 'Cadiz' alloys that are found on the Golf R.

The interior has been updated with new dials, and an instrument cluster above the centre console which houses a chronometer, charge pressure and oil temperature gauges in tribute to the original 1974 model.

The first UK deliveries are expected to be made in September.
