In the rankings of current automobiles, the Ferrari 458 is near the top for performance.  It's a seriously fast car.  A combination of engineering, Italian want-factor, and space ship styling puts it on the top of a lot of people's Christmas lists.  Even though it's the "baby" Ferrari, it can smoke 99% of cars on the road.  A 4.5L direct-injected V8 in the middle cranks out 562 horsepower, with a 7-speed twin clutch automated manual banging out shifts at the 9,000rpm redline.  Car & Driver tested a 458 Italia against it's two closest competitors - the McLaren MP4-12C and Porsche 911 GT2 RS, and it put a hurting on their test equipment - 0-60 in 3.0 seconds flat, 0-100 in 6.5, quarter mile in 11.0 seconds at 131mph.

Among the 1% of cars (Occupy Maranello!) it can't hold a candle to is the Koenigsegg Agera R.  This hand-built oddity from Sweden (of all places) is in another realm altogether.  It's the kind of car that Veyron drivers who know what's up don't mess with.  If you want to outrun an Agera R, you're going to need a missile.  Or a bullet.  Or the Large Hadron Collider.  Stephen Hawking would need to be involved.  So when you put a 458 Italia up against one in a rolling-start drag race, you're going to lose. But how bad?

Oh, well, uh, yeah.  The Agera R plays the numbers game for those with a death wish.  It might be pretty, but it's housing a 5.0L 32v all-aluminum twin turbo V8 in the middle.  It puts out 1,115bhp at 6,900rpm and 885 lb-ft at 4,100rpm.  The Ferrari is no heavyweight, at 3,480lbs.  The Agera R, though, is 500lbs lighter.  Still, you don't expect anything to leave Maranello's pride and joy like it's a misfiring Yugo.  Go Sweden.  Speaking of the Agera R, it's been busy setting records lately.  Here it's doing some 0-300km/h-0 and 0-200mph-o runs.

That's 0-186mph and back to a dead stop in 21.19 seconds.  It hits 300kp/h from a standstill more than five seconds faster than a Veyron.  It does 0-125mph-0 faster than most "sports cars" can do a quarter mile - a certified 12.7 seconds.  0-200mph-0 (322km/h) in 24.96s.  Absolutely nuts.  I'd be mildly alarmed driving that.
