These 60s Nurburgring Photos Show How Terrifyingly 'Naked' The Green Hell Was
Without armco barriers, the Nordschleife of the 1960s looks very different, and very dangerous
These days, photos of the Nordschleife are all over the web. We see everything from a Burberry-capped chav thrashing his little Saxo, to camouflaged concepts pounding the circuit in intensive tests. But back in the 60s it looked very different, and this gallery of images gives us a stark realisation about how terrifying the track used to be. There are no armco barriers in sight, and trees hazardously line many parts of the circuit.
Taken by a Porsche engineer as he drove a Mercedes around the track, the Kodachromes were acquired by a Redditor who is looking for more information about the man. Check out the full gallery, complete with original annotations.
