Sorry - The Next Audi TT Will Be An Electric SUV

We’ve reached peak 2019 with this news: as the world goes mad for SUVs, even a sports car is going to be turned into a high-riding family car

Making passengers fold themselves up to get into the back of a car is becoming increasingly unfashionable. Sports cars have always been a small-selling market – few people can live with their impracticality or can afford to have one as a second car – but even one of the more popular, mainstream coupes is growing up and completely changing.

Yep, the Audi TT will be made into a crossover, Auto Express reports, with back doors that are big enough for humans to get in and a boot space big enough for all the paraphernalia of a young family. We expect it’ll still have massive air intakes on the front bumper and massive wheels, in an attempt to look sporty, but it won’t look anywhere near as lithe as a low, two-door coupe.

Plus, the next TT will only come with a plug socket, not a fuel filler cap. We’ve known for a while that Audi was planning to make the TT electric, but it’s rumoured that the new model will be called the Audi eTTron – highlighting its embrace of electrification. The range is likely to be between 200 and 350 miles, depending on the version you choose.

It has been suggested that, like the current car, you’ll be able to buy TTs with different power outputs. The entry-level car should have around 200bhp, while a range-topping model with over 400bhp would be the equivalent of today’s five-cylinder TT RS. Like the bulk of the VW Group’s electric cars, it’ll sit on the same MEB platform as the VW ID 3.

We’ve also heard that the interior will get an upgrade, and that Audi will push the TT upmarket. The current TT introduced the Virtual Cockpit – now standard across the Audi range – and the next model will be just as groundbreaking, with a massive Tesla-style infotainment touchscreen that’ll control almost everything including the climate control.

The future of the TT has been in doubt for some time, as five years ago it was suggested that the sports car could grow into a four-door coupe or even an SUV. It’ll be more expensive than the current car, but will be one of a whole range of electric Audi models.

What do you think of an electric TT crossover?

I wish I understood why people are so obsessed with cars that aren’t fun to drive, boring, are mostly CVTs and look more and more alike. Arent millennials obsessed with being unique.

It’s not millennials buying them tbh, most can’t afford one (oof), tends to be mums in their 40s with little interest in cars from my experience-

But whatever, I just wish manufacturers would come up with new model names for them tbh

millennials do not care about cars.
All they want is fuel economy and tech, that’s why we have 0.5L econoshitboxes with 10 inch screens and 1000 assists but no power and no fun

They’ve prioritized profits over their products. It’s a shame

As an owner of a current gen TT I can say I won’t be buying the next gen one. Audi already have 6? SUV platforms including an electric one and nearly 3x that amount if you include ‘s’ line and ‘RS’. I’m sure this will sell well because for a while the TT name will have some draw, but will it sell to the people on the market looking for a sports coupe? No. Will it just draw business from people buying other (audi) SUVs? Yes. Personally my business and many others will now go elsewhere.
