Say Hello To The Gumpert Explosion: The Apollo's 4WD Little Brother

Despite going into administration last year, Gumpert is back with this four-wheel drive, 414bhp coupe

Gumpert Explosion

If you're a fan of obscure supercar start-up companies, we have good news! Despite going into administration last year, German car maker Gumpert is back with something a little less dramatic than its brutally fast (and brutally styled) Apollo supercar. Unlike its burly V8-engined big brother, the theatrically named Explosion gets a 2.0-litre turbo four-pot powering all four wheels.

It's a powerful 2.0-litre though, churning out 414bhp and 383lb/ft of torque. Those figures are awfully similar to the recently unveiled Audi quattro sport concept. Coincidence? Probably not, Gumpert already sources the Apollo's V8 from Audi, and the Explosion is thought to share components with the TT, so that'll probably be a heavily boosted TFSI engine under the bonnet.

There won't be much bulk for the 414bhp engine to shift about either - the chassis is made from carbonfibre, while the body is glassfibre. 0-62mph takes three seconds dead, and the top speed is over 186mph. An even more explosive S version is planned, with a 495bhp, 461lb/ft 2.5-litre engine - again, we're expecting that to be Audi sourced, in the form of the company's warbly turbo five-pot.

The car you can see here is at this week's Geneva motor show, and is the first completed pre-production model. Assuming Gumpert can stay afloat long enough, the Explosion will go into production later this year, with a price tag of £86,000.
