Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT: Crazy Just Got A Little Crazier

Even though it has only been with us since 2010, Mercedes-Benz have decided that the ultimate AMG supercar could use a few minor tweaks.

Even though it has only been with us since 2010, Mercedes-Benz have decided that the ultimate AMG supercar could use a few minor tweaks. From November 2012, you'll be able to get your hands on the SLS AMG GT but there are predictably a few more changes than just two extra letters stuck onto the boot lid.

On the outside, the headlights are darker and more menacing. The brake calipers are red and the grille with little fins where the 6.3 badges are located are finished in gloss black.

The interior aims to be more luxurious. There are more alcantara lashings around the seats and doors. The steering wheel has also got bits of alcantara on it, a red bit of leather at the 12 o'clock position (I haven't a clue why either) and the bottom spoke is finished in gloss black, so too are the instrument dials. You can even upgrade the interior to a diamond quilted leather design similar to the S65 and SL 65 V12 AMGs. Very lush indeed.

However, the most important change is under the bonnet. The SLS GT still has a naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 but power is up from 563bhp to 583bhp meaning the 0-62mph time is down by 0.1 seconds to 3.7 seconds. That's also thanks to the revised 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The suspension has been fiddled with too and only two settings are available: comfy-ish and rock solid by the sounds of it, as Mercedes say the springs have been significantly stiffened compared to the current car.

Even with the extra grunt, the top speed is still limited to 198mph and the torque output remains the same at 479lb-ft. UK prices haven't been announced just yet but what we do know is that if you're living in fear of bashing your head on the glorious gullwing doors, you can get the car as a rapid roadster for a 'small' fee. If the power increase has disappointed you somewhat then we still reckon an SLS Black Series is on the cards. We hope.
