Mazda Could Still Build A Production RX Vision With A Rotary Engine

Judging by Topgear.com's chat with Mazda Design Director Kevin Rice, a production version of the gorgeous RX Vision could still happen

When Mazda revealed its stunning RX Vision concept last year, we dared to believe a production version might be built. Hell, Mazda even hinted that it was a strong possibility. It’s pretty much been a case of radio silence since then, so is it still on the agenda? Judging by Topgear.com’s interview with Mazda Design Director Tom Rice at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa D’Este - where the concept was displayed - it’s still looking like it could happen.

“We’d love to build it,” Rice confirms, adding: “[At] an event like this, you’re together with Aston Martins, classic Ferraris and so on, and in a sense, we feel like we’re guests and we don’t really belong…But everyone is telling us that it doesn’t matter, because the RX is so beautiful. They say: don’t worry about anything, just go and build it”. So Mazda wants to built it, but will it actually go and do it? It’s all down to the engine.

While the concept is just a show car and not a runner, its low bonnet was penned with a rotary engine in mind. And a new rotary engine hasn’t been ruled out. “We didn’t just leave it [the rotary engine] with the RX-8….In the back rooms at Mazda, we’re still developing it, and when the world’s ready to buy another rotary, we’ll be ready to provide it.”

So, do you feel ready, world? Make enough noise and Mazda might at last make this thing…

“Of course, today’s emissions targets are the biggest hurdle to overcome for any future rotary engine, but Mazda is confident it can deliver.”

10 years after RX vision’s road going counterpart has gone into production:
“Mazda admits cheating on emission tests.”

I’d still love to see this beaty built, as long as it is as great as the RX-7 was.

If they can pull off a reliable rotary engine here, I hope they can make a relatively affordable car with one as well.

But why is the hood so long? Isn’t the point of a rotary that it can be compact?

You could say that the Mazda’s RX Vision was quite “Rice-y”.
