Ken Block's Commuter: A Ford SVT Raptor
We've all seen Gymkhana 5 by now. In fact to date, nearly 25 and a half million people have watched the 10 minutes of rubber-layin' on the streets of San Francisco.
We've all seen Gymkhana 5 by now. In fact to date, nearly 25 and a half million people have watched the 10 minutes of rubber-layin' on the streets of San Francisco. While his 600-horsepower Fiesta with a 0-60mph time of 1.8 seconds is great for a job like this, he can't really use it to commute to work or take the family on holiday.
All 'Ken-from-the-block' had to do to get himself a civil set of wheels was to have a chin wag with his sponsor, Ford. They were incredibly impressed with the amazing work he had done last year, so they said, 'just tell us what you want and we'll send you one'. Well, in a more professional way I presume. BMW did that for Usain Bolt y'know.
This was his gift. Not just any Ford F-150 pick up truck. It's the SVT Raptor which has a 6.2-litre V8 - instead of a 5.4-litre - that produces 411hp. To tell it apart from the standard car, it has a wider body and fenders plus a whopping big F-O-R-D grille on the front instead of chrome bits with a blue oval. Ken's particular Raptor also has a matte black finish and black alloys, a look guaranteed to make your pants brown when you see it in your rear view mirror.
This car then is a much better daily driver than his Fiesta rally car. It's less likely to get nicked if you left it in a car park, it would laugh in the face of severe winter spells and it can tow the family boat, which incidently is what he has been up to this week.
