It Looks Like A Four-Cylinder Diesel Jaguar F-Type Is Coming

Whether you buy a V6 or a V8 Jaguar F-Type, you can be sure your ears will be treated to a jolly nice time. However, it’s looking like a less tuneful version of Jaguar’s pretty coupe and cabriolet combo might be on the way: a diesel.

Oh yes: alongside the long-rumoured new entry-level 2.0-litre four-pot Igenium petrol F-Types, it seems Jaguar is also about to introduce the 2.0-litre diesel version from the engine family to the sports car. Spy shots from Autocar captured an oil-burning F-Type test mule with JLR engineering big cheese Mike Cross behind the wheel, and after running the plates on the DVLA database, the publication found that the car is registered as having a 2.0-litre diesel engine.

This could of course amount to nothing - plenty of cars never make it past the testing stage, after all. But if this did happen, what would you think of such a vehicle? Does the idea of a diesel F-Type disgust you, or is the prospect of a torquey little diesel Jaguar roadster/coupe weirdly appealing? Let us know in the comments.

Jaguar tried shoving a 3.0d in the XK about 6 years ago and cancelled it. Hopefully they will with this idea too.

I’d take it and swap it a V10 VW diesel, how about that?

4pot petrol would work, look at all the big boy hot hatches, A45, S3 and Golf R, with a decent map these are capable of nearly 400bhp and 40mpg. Great idea…….180bhp Diesel 4pot, worst idea ever……

There’s absolutely no problem with diesel engines, but it just seems crazy to me that such a desirable and capable sports car like the F-Type would remain either of those things with an oil burner under the bonnet. But the thing is, the figures that diesels put on paper are what sell cars: high MPG (with relatively high power too), low emissions and low road tax. Look at the Audi TT for example; another sports car that has had the diesel treatment and now the majority of TTs sold have a diesel power plant. Whilst car guys everywhere will be forever puzzled as to why anyone would want a 4-cylinder diesel over a smooth petrol V6, there will always be a Chelsea tractor soccer mom driver somewhere who wants a flashy F-Type and couldn’t care less about what makes it go. The truth is, diesels sell.

I thinks it’s the same four pot that’s being tested in the Range Rover sport. It’s specs aren’t that bad, like somewhat 237bhp and somewhat 368 ft-lb of torque, but that’s for the Range rover. And because the F-type is expected to have 300 bhp (according to Autocar), so the torque figures will be insane.

Knowing Jaguar, it will be the most magnificent sounding 4 cylinder in production

I’m from Coventry, the home if Jag, and have seen these in development. Do they sound like diesels? No they do not!
