I'm Driving A VW Golf GTI Clubsport For Six Months: What Do You Want To Know?

Christmas has come a few days early for TeamCT, as we’ve just been given the keys to this rather dapper hatchback for just under six months. It’s a Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 40 Clubsport - to give it its official name - although I suspect we’ll just end up calling it The Clubsport.

It effectively replaces the BMW M2 we’ve been running since September, although that car will be sticking around for another couple of weeks.

It produces 286bhp when its overboost function kicks in (yo?), and will hit 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds. It’s fitted with VW Group’s fancy VAQ differential, so can send anything up to 100 per cent of that power output to either front wheel if required. It also has a pretty cool aero package, which cancels out lift entirely.

‘Ours’ is the five-door DSG automatic version in Tornado Red, and as such it has the largest base price of the range at £33,005. After adding £1350 bucket seats, £830 adaptive dampers, £595 19-inch alloy wheels and a few other optional bits and pieces, the price inflates to £36,721.

As ever with our long-term test cars, we want you guys to get involved. So, what do you want to know about the Clubsport, and what would you like to see us do with it?

Please do some sort of a long roadtrip (like you did with the Type R) and review how it feels?

Ok nice, but please don’t Bash on the harsh ride on the Streets Its a track oriented car and when reviewers start bashing on things that make you go Faster just because you Found it slightly discomforting is very discouraging Its how you create soft Cars, you don’t buy a track car to daily drive! Yes you can daily drive them and i know People that Will but dont do the type r all over again pls..!! Have fun with the golf m8tes

The clubsport S is a track car but a 5 door, 5 seat dsg clubsport is still very much a road car so it needs to be comfortable. Other journalists say it rides well.

Don’t worry, the Clubsport is still comfortable and a brilliant daily driver, the adaptive dampers are really worth it :)

One question MattRobinson How do you do these posts with the heading in the picture and the nice scroll effect? Is it only possible as moderator? Because it looks stunning ^^

How does it compare to the normal GTI and the GTI Clubsport S? And how is it up against seat leon cupra 290?

Slots rather neatly in between as you’d expect, but it’s probably closer to the S than the GTI in terms of the straight-line performance, handling, suspension firmness etc.

It’s been nearly a year since I last drove a Leon Cupra, but I’d say it feels a little more focused than that. We should be driving the updated Cupra early 2017…

I suppose you could say the ST is more exciting, but for the wrong reasons - it torque steers horribly! No issue with the Golf, thanks to the VAQ setup

These are listed on Auto Trader at £50,000. Is a Golf really worth that much?
