Here's A Reminder That 2016 Was Actually One Of The Best Years For Fast Cars Ever

Evo's near-pornographic car of the year video shows us that while downsizing is robbing us of big N/A engines, there's arguably never been a better time for proper drivers' cars

Ask any petrolhead when performance cars ‘peaked’, and they might say around the 1990s. This was the decade of the last air-cooled Porsches, a time of countless world-beating Japanese fast cars that have now mostly died out, and way before electric power steering came along. Or perhaps some time in the mid-to-late 2000s, when no replacement for displacement arguably reached its zenith, with Mercedes slapping its 6.2-litre V8 in every AMG that moved, and BMW garnishing a 5-series with a V10.

Arguably though, it’s right now. 2016. And hopefully, next year too. Because if you think about it, despite the rise of downsizing and the general reduction of engine displacement, manufacturers seem more determined than ever to produce stunning drivers’ cars, even though the market for them is relatively small.

Evo’s latest ‘Coty’ video - a particularly significant one since it’s the last to feature Evo veterans Nick Trott and Henry Catchpole - is a potent reminder of how good petrolheads have got it right now (petrol prices aside), by gathering together the best fast cars of the year. And crikey, it’s one hell of a roster: we’re talking the Porsche 911 R, Honda NSX, Aston Martin Vantage GT8, Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, and the comparatively humble but incredible VW Golf Clubsport S to name a few.

Sit back, relax, and give this a watch: it’s well worth your time.

I don’t agree with them. In my opinion Focus RS is a car of the year. But hey we have diffrent opinions and that’s what makes us humans

Good to see the M4 GTS getting some love, especially now that all 12 year-olds think its crap just because Clarkson said so…

I’ve never heard what he said about the GTS. I know MotorTrend proved it was slower than the Shelby GT350R , it under steered, and they called it over priced and said “It’s a good thing this car looks so good, or else we’d hate it”

Well I could’ve known it was the Porsche from the start… It’s almost always the Porsche

I love COTY, they always have a few domestic, attainable underdogs mixing it up with the supercars

The most significant cars for 2016 are the Ferrari 488GTB and the Mercedes AMG GTR. Other cars can’t touch them.
