Speculation has been rampant for sometime about an Audi Ur-Quattro model based on the Audi A5. However, the Quattro Concept's introduction came as a surprise - and a good one. Audi has been ramping up its presence in the performance arena, and the Quattro fits in that.

With all the performance models that have been approved at Audi recently, this report doesn't come as a shock. When the car came out, we guessed it had a good chance of seeing a limited-production run. The Quattro Concept looks pretty production ready, based off a variation of the Audi RS5 platform.

It would offer a very high-level of performance at any rate: the concept features a power-to-weight ratio similar to the R8 5.2 FSI. That would provide a run to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds.

The production car would likely have a version of the five-cylinder found in the TT-RS, making around 350 horsepower. Interestingly, the car could possibly be built by ItalDesign, the famed Italian design firm recently acquired by Volkswagen.

Stefan Reil, Head of Development at Audi Quattro GmbH has this to say about the possibility: "We need feedback to see if it is possible. Audi has no heritage in building 200-500 cars that are really exotic. But it won't be over €100,000 [£86,000 / US$139,000]."

So there you have it - Audi is seriously discussing the possibility. Of course, we think the Quattro would be an excellent model that will only help to further build up Audi's image in the marketplace.
