It should come as no surprise whatsoever that Aston Martin’s first production SUV - the DBX - is powered by a Mercedes-AMG-sourced 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. This week Gaydon has confirmed what we already knew, although it has also divulged something we didn’t - the specs.

The ‘hot V’ turbo engine develops 542bhp, making it Aston’s most potent V8-powered vehicle. The Vantage and DB11 V8 for comparison make do with a ‘mere’ 503bhp.

Torque is up too - by a useful 19lb ft. This brings the total figure to 516lb ft - identical to the V12 DB11 AMR.

Acceleration figures haven’t been given just yet, but we’d estimate that the DBX will crack the 0-62mph sprint in around four seconds. The SUV is said to have “repeatedly exceed 180mph” during testing.

Aston Martin’s “dedicated acoustic team” (yep, that’s a thing) has also worked hard to make sure it sounds a little different to an AMG. The DBX uses the British company’s own exhaust system, which has been “tuned to reflect a deep bass with increasing mid-tones, creating true auditory exhilaration”.

For an extra-lovely soundtrack and even more power, Aston Martin may at some point fit its 5.2-litre V12.

The DBX will be revealed in full this December.
