Jaguar’s new XE saloon was revealed last night, and although the initial range-topping 335bhp XE S is a tantalising prospect, we can’t help but wonder what an ultra-hot Jaguar XER-S would be like.

A mad version of the XE with a 542bhp V8 - the same engine as in the XFR-S - is something that’s widely expected, and with that amount of power would come a car that’d put BMW’s 425bhp M3 to shame; especially in a straight line.

With similar grunt to its XFR-S brother - and a lower weight figure - the XER-S would be an absolute weapon. We’d estimate 0-62mph times of between 3.9 and 4.1 seconds and a top speed electronically pegged at 186mph. And with the XE already being 20 per cent stiffer than the XF, it’d be a much sharper tool when driving swiftly.

The suspension and brakes would no doubt be beefed up for the task and no bootlid would be complete without the now-trademark RS spoiler. You can expect the eventual car to come in several different colours, but the only one you really want is Smurf blue, obviously.
