Once upon a time, the Nissan GT-R was quite a bargain. As it’s aged, however, it’s also gotten more expensive, a point proved not just by the £93k 50th Anniversary car but also the 2020 version of the GT-R Nismo, which Nissan has just revealed to cost upwards of £174,995 in the UK. In the US meanwhile, it’s $212,435.

This is rather a lot, considering it’s just £10,000 shy of the sensational McLaren 600LT, and around £14,000 shy of Mercedes-AMG’s own GT R in ultra-focused ‘Pro’ trim. Is the old dog really worth it?

Well, it has learned some new tricks. The turbochargers, for instance, are lifted from the GT3 racing version. The gearbox has been improved, the weight has dropped, the brakes are better and there have been various aero tweaks. The final piece of the puzzle is a new set of Dunlop tyres. All of this works together to slash the GT-R Nismo’s lap time at Nissan’s development circuit by 2.5 seconds.

The development of the car was done using a ‘kaizen’ mindset, which Nissan says is the “constant need to evolve and fine-tune”.

If this bewinged chunk of kaizen is just a little too much for you, however, there’s always the GT-R Track Edition to consider. It’s substantially less at £99,995, although it’ll be easy to inflate that figure with options including carbon ceramic brakes (£7500) and various carbonfibre components including seats (£6750), roof (£3000) and a spoiler/boot lid combo (£4500).

nissan giving gtr updates every year doesnt mean anything for the consumer, they want new model, people would’ve been better of with a used gtr+mod.
compare a 2019 nismo gtr with a used modded gtr, non-enthusiast would think its the same car, so there’s no prestige at all, gtr isn’t comparable with porsche 911 which has similar design with every updates because porsche has a following and prestige by the non-enthusiast which makes them valuable compare to this

The thing is, the R35 GT-R evolves much like Takumi Fujiwara’s AE86. Throughout the production years it has been tuned here and there, every once in a while. Look at what it has managed - since it’s debut in ~2007 it is still a mind-blowing machine that makes many modern and brand new supercars crap their pants. I think the GT-R presents its legendary capability once more and that should be appreciated. I know the overall design is not up-to-date but maybe it’s actually timeless. I’m really happy it doesn’t feature any Renault drivetrain technologies. Moreover - it’s still being worked on and made better. The new GT-R will probably come soon too, but the R35 will be forever remembered as a machine ahead of its time. People are OK with Takumi’s 86’s evolution - why not be OK with GT-R’s?

Finally someone with some sense. WHy are people mad about a price for a car they weren’t gonna by anyway. There is something to be said for continuing to improve on the r35.

If its a blast to drive, its worth it. It’s probably dead reliable at this point too. Something you can’t say about many super cars

This is ridiculous. If I wanted a powerful and fast R35, I’d tune it by myself. But, it is pointless to pay such an amount of money for a car that remains using the same platform since the time it came out…. It truly is overrated, even by Nissan itself.

Tunning it yourself would mostly likely void the warranty pretty quickly. Old platforms get drolled over all day by enthusiasts. Air cooled porsches, old as supras, old ferraris on and on yada yada yada. The age of the platfom has nothing to do with how effective the car is. Its a platform Nissan has been tunning to perfection since this thing came out. That’s worth something to me. Newer isn’t always better. Its about the driving experience.
