17 Cars With The Sexiest Silhouettes
They say that a car can't be art, but we beg to differ. Inspired by our recent Guess The Car Game - Silhouettes, we thought we'd take a look at a selection of 17 motors that have the best curves and lines in the business.
17. Fisker Karma
This was one of the coolest looking saloons money could buy, until Justin Bieber bought one and the company dived into financial difficulties. Still, it's an environmentally friendly method of motoring that said no to boxy Prius looks and yes to BMW & Aston Martin design inspiration.
16. Audi TT
The TT might be a hairdresser's favourite, but you've simply got to love those curves and lines. We buy more TTs than any other country.
15. Bugatti Veyron Supersport
Maybe it's the car's potential to hit 62mph from standstill in 2.46 seconds or its 267mph top speed that makes us weak at the knees, but you've got to admit, the Bug has a distinct silhouette that everyone respects.
14. BMW Z8
Another one of Henrick Fisker's creations to hit the list. It's the mostly forgotten, but sharp-looking BMW Z8. With the hardtop off, you've got to love the car's rear haunches and pointed nose.
13. Ferrari F12
The key to the perfect silhouette for us is a long bonnet, short tail and curved roof. The new F12 ticks all those boxes, and then some. We think it's the prettiest Ferrari in the current range, but not the prettiest overall, as you'll see further down.
12. Porsche Cayman
The last Cayman was described perfectly by Sir Clarkson as a 'kangaroo.' With a few tweaks, the latest Cayman is now a Porsche worthy of a second glance. The only thing stopping it from completely killing the 911 now is the fact that it's only a 2 seater.
11. Citroen GT
It's French and made by Citroen, so you'd expect an orgy of curves and lines. You can't buy this Citroen in real life as there is only 1 in existence, but you can still admire it virtually on Gran Turismo.
10. Maserati GranTurismo
Sticking with Gran Turismo, we come to Maserati's current luxury GT. Even though the car is longer than a Range Rover and nearly as wide as a a bus, it still looks gorgeous.
9. Mercedes McLaren SLR
Yes, those big vents to help cool the supercharged AMG nutcase under the bonnet do look vulgar, but put the car in the shadows and you'll adore the long, pointed front end and short tail.
8. Alfa Romeo 8C
You can't not have an Alfa Romeo in a list of cars that make great silhouettes, and the best one to us is the 8C Competizione. It's not a shape you'll see often as there are only 500 units on the globe.
7. Ferrari 288 GTO
We don't just think it has a great silhouette, we think it's the prettiest Ferrari in existence. In fact, you guys even voted it as the greatest looking car ever. But best silhouette? Not quite.
6. Aston Martin Rapide
Every Aston could be in this spot as the all look pretty similar. Stretching a DB9 on a rack to make the Rapide saloon though was a great decision. It just somehow makes it look better proportioned than the rest of the range.
5. Ariel Atom
The top spec V8-engined Atom has a whopper of a spoiler on the back which helps downforce, but spoils the looks a tad. The normal Civic Type-R engined version looks just right thanks to the curves in the exoskeleton and air intake.
4. Jaguar Project 7
As soon as we saw this arrive at Goodwood, we had to add it to the list. The F-Type is already gorgeous enough, but shortening the windscreen, adding the slick spoiler and the aerodynamic cowl behind the driver makes it look sublime.
3. Pagani Huayra
Giving a Zonda the evolution treatment has worked wonders for Pagani. The Huayra is still recognisable as a completely insane Italian, but a bit tidier. Curves and slashes worthy of its £849,000 price tag.
2. Eagle E-Type Speedster
While the modified E-Type took the silver medal in our sexiest cars poll, we believe it has a sexier silhouette than the Ferrari 288 that took gold. Just making the windscreen smaller and removing the fabric roof makes it look perfect.
1. Lancia Stratos
When it comes to silhouettes nothing is more distinct, sexy (to a bloke) and adored than the Lancia Stratos. Like art, it's something you love looking at rather than driving. Let's bow down to Bertone for penning one of the best shapes in automotive history!
