Overplayed and takes out originality in modifying if everyone does the same thing the same way
but so is converting to E85 or putting a big turbo and FMIC on a JDM car. LS engines make good consistent power. Im not saying I’m a LS fan boy just don’t understand all the hate they get.
People hate them because they are overdone. I totally understand and partially side with this viewpoint, but I also understand the attraction of putting an LS engine into a car. For my example, let’s look at the most typical LS swap (at least for America): an S13 240sx. The KA24 that comes in the 240 isn’t a terrible engine, but almost everyone looking for serious power will do an engine swap. SR20s are the classic example, as there is no mods needing to be made to the engine bay, and everything more or less bolts up. A quick ebay search shows several SR20s ready to go for around $1500. That will get you an engine that makes probably between 200 and 230hp, which is really a decent number. An LS1 on the other hand, (again this was just a quick glance at ebay) will run you closer to 2500 to 5000 dollars. But for that money, you are getting 350 horsepower. Now, with an SR, that number is easily achievable, but you will have to start modding the engine, which costs money, and, eventually, will sacrifice reliability. An aluminum block LS1 also weighs around 400 pounds dry, SR20s weigh just a hair less. Overall, there’s a strong argument for LS swaps, but I probably wouldn’t do one. Also sorry for any errors, most of the research I did was quick google/wikipedia checks on the first available link.
TLDR: A crapload of people do LS swaps because they are light, relatively inexpensive, and can make a crapload of power reliably.
i think the hate stems from people that downgrade and devalue their cars with an ls swap
People who have never driven or worked on a car suddenly become purists, and try to write off someone else’s blood sweat and tears
The funny part is that guy they’re busy ragging on doesn’t care, is proud of the car, and drives the balls off it with an ear to ear grin. Who cares if it’s got another manufacturer’s engine in it
Ls engines have good power and reliability, but don’t hate me for this, I’m not one for putting ADM parts in a JDM car, I still respect those who went out of the way and used their personal time to swap the engine to an LS motor, just my personal preference.
I don’t get it…. An LS with bone stock internals will reliably hold over 1000 hp.
People hate LS engines because it destroys the characteristics of JDM.
