The tappet is stuck in the bore and vice grips have nothing to hold on to.

We recently did a top overhaul changing the cylinder head gasket, valve seals and, camshaft oil seals. We put it all back together and started the engine. We noticed an unusual sound. It was cylinder two’s two exhaust valves that failed to close properly meaning that the piston hit the valves. We took it apart and saw that the two valve buckets(tappets) were stuck.

If the buckets are tight get a strong magnet couple flathead screwdrivers and try to move it and the valves are bent you could try taping them on the head

We don’t have access to strong magnets. We think that it may be just dried grease or some form of dirt that caused the seized tappets. Taping what to the head?

Try pouring a slight amount of diesel where the tappet is stuck. Apply it liberally where it’s stuck and let it soak over night. Change your oil as soon as it’s free.
