Can you be a petrolhead by owning a diesel ?
Since I remember myself I am in love with cars.It all starts at the age of 9 when my dad takes me to a track for go cart. That was it .Since then I always want my own cart.Unfortunately my parent’s can’t get me one, so the dream was gone. But the interest about cars it has just begun. After a few years I was buying as many car magazines as I can.At the age of 15 when all of my friends was crazy about motorbikes by owning one and tunning it, I was insisted on cars .I didn’t like them then so I don’t like them now.I was always that we call a ‘’car guy’’.
Finally the day that I was waiting for has arrived.Ι was 18 and it was time to have my driving license. My first ride was my dads car, a 2000 Daewoo Nubira 1.6 .I was so excited that I driving it all day long.It wasn’t something special ,but it was my daily car so i was in love with it.
At the age of 20 it was time to buy my first car.I want it to be a coupe.I always love coupes.I also want it to be Italian. As a kid I have always a Ferrari’s post in my bedroom, but I couldn’t buy a Ferrari so I was looking for an Alfa Romeo!(pretty close)
Ok, the truth is that my parents helped me to buy my first car.But they would not help me with the running costs. So the tax , the insurance, the services and the fuel was all up to me.So a wanted one car that it has to be a coupe and it has to be affordable for daily use.
So I bought a 2007 Alfa Romeo GT with a diesel engine!!!
I own it for five years and i have done 90.000km with it.The car is gorgeous! The handling and also the performance is pretty enough for me.The only thing you have to accept is the noise. We can’t have it all. That’s life, but I can live with it.It’s my daily car ,but almost every Sunday I take it for a ride just to drive it.
I thing that being a petrolhead is much more than just what type of fuel your car is running on.I thing that being a petrolhead is a way of life.
So yes , I believe that you can be a petrolhead by owning a diesel.

Being a petrolhead isn’t defined by the car you drive. It’s the way you think about cars. If you can really find that passion for cars in your heart, then you’re a real petrolhead.
I agree with you!
But the idiots on the internet think that if you own a prius you’re not a petrolhead!
It just happens that the car you drive reflects if you’re a petrolhead.
i remember my dads diesel inline four 4 litre landcruiser. driving that thing felt like a boat and a truck combined.
Can you be a real petrol-head if you use E85?
Definatly, E85 allows for much higher boost levels and double digit timing in boost due to its knock resistance. I bet alot lf the (small) market for e85 is tuners seeking more powerrr
The camberm on your bmw baby car though
Yesss!
The diesels nowaday havent much difference from petrol cars any more. I loke diesels when they are a V8 and sit in a big rig but I wouldnt uy a diesel car , but not because they dont sound good. I just hate that coal that covers everything in big cities….. ( for example: There was a time then all churches in cologne where white….)
Alfa diesel is still an Alfa and remember the rule Clarkson made!
No really, you can be a car guy in any car, but a car doesn’t make you a car guy.
So yes you can be a petrolhead in a diesel.
I can’t imagine better engine in Mercedes W123 than a lazy and loud diesel. It have own unique climate and fits perfectly on this car. Next example is offroad cars, diesel = lot of torque, also I like that sound when it comes from 4.2 Patrol. But I wouldn’t buy a road sporty car with a diesel, I’d rather like high-reving petrol engine in that type of car :) Maybe if I would need car to do long routes then I would like to :)
in my opinion, the diesel engine is an improvement over the regular otto cycle engine. diesels are very cool!
Whoever says diesels can’t be sporty, never heard of this monster. Alpina D3 Biturbo is actually a bit faster than the new M3, while having a lot better fuel economy. And D4 is even better. Let than sink in for a moment.
It’s a real shame no one actually tries to make proper sporty diesels, mostly because of their reputation. They are possible, and they are better choice than petrol, but I think car manufacturers are afraid of not having a market for them, as everyone will just ignore diesels if they are looking for fast cars.
I couldn’t agree more with this post. I daily a manual bmw diesel and I just love it. The cold starts, the turbo diesel sound, the fuel efficiency… it’s just the diesel life bro
