How much does a complete fully running 2JZ engine cost?

Are they reliable? What are some of the maintenance costs?

Dont know about the price but parts are expensive (atleast in Denmark)
They are pretty reliable, internals should hold up to around 700hp.
A guy I know is running around 500hp almost stock and he has no reliability issues.
Petrol is expensive though, it drinks a bit of fuel.

I saw one a while ago for around 5000 but i think it depends on the condition

They’re known for being very reliable. Prices really depend on your location, should not be too expensive, lets say you have permanent engine damage in a GT(S)T skyline in my country you would probably go for a 2jz-swap if you want the best bang for your buck. It’s a toyota engine so parts are not going to be cheap, maintenance shouldn’t be that high though because it doesn’t really have a lot of issues. Never forget that every engine (although the 2jz is “indestructible”) wears and needs maintenance according to use, drifters need way more regular oil change for example.
As a comment on what Mads Bergholdt commented, I believe 2jz internals can handle up to 1000hp, where as RB26s can handle a maximum of 700hp on stock internals.
And I will get hate on 2jz in a skyline, I am a RB-fan but looking at drifting this would probably happen. Reliability + displacement + availability. If you have the money and it really is your dream build always go RB, but 2jz can generally handle more abuse and is cheaper (to run).

Just buy a totalled GS300, IS300, or SC300 Lexus, and pull the engine, change the head gasket.. and bolt on some turbos.. Reason i say do it this way, is that you get all the parts needed for your swap.. the engine, mounts, transmission, rear, computer, gauges, etc… it’s all there.. cheaper to do it this way than buy the individual parts..

Also..
If you don’t plan on doing major HP, look at the 1JZ and the 7MGTE..
The 7MTE is bullet proof too, but the head gaskets leak due to them not using Stainless steel gaskets, this was corrected in later models, but generally you can get an early model, do the head gasket yourself, and have a 700HP monster for less than 1Grand..
