This Amazing Value Porsche Boxster Is Impossible To Resist

Although the advert text is very light on detail, the pictures describe a clean, tidy and desperately tempting old Boxster for a price that makes us hyperventilate
This Amazing Value Porsche Boxster Is Impossible To Resist

A couple of news snippets this week have put us in a Porsche frame of mind. There was the fantastic old twin-cylinder diesel tractor, and the new 718 Boxster and Cayman GTS brothers.

But while the new kids have four cylinders, 2.5 litres and will cost you £60,000 or more, we’ve found a rather more affordable option with an extra 200cc and two more cylinders to enjoy. The price? Just £2700.

You get the classic six-pot wail, timeless soft-top charm and potentially a massive barrel of bills, but how tempting is this year 2000 example? It’s the cheapest 2.7 Boxster we could find on Auto Trader, and we’re trying to find excuses not to buy it.

It’s a 132,000-miler with just two owners in its near-18 years of life. The 2687cc flat-six puts out a very modest 220 ponies but this is more about character than cataclysmic speed. It has a non-dated number plate, which is nice, and looks in really tidy condition.

The black leather seats look pretty much pristine, the steering wheel looks in great order compared to plenty we’ve seen, and even the manual gear knob, what we can see of it, looks in fine fettle too.

To give you more reasons to get excited, the wheels look mostly damage-free, the headlights are fairly clear and we can’t see any major bodywork damage. All of this begs the question, as we breathe heavily into our computer screens, as to what’s wrong with it.

The fabled and feared IMS bearing failure is one thing to consider. The incredibly, suspiciously short listing text goes into absolutely no detail whatsoever about the condition of the mechanicals (or anything else, for that matter).

We’d want the engine and running gear checked out. It’d be a good idea to drain the oil where the car sits and check for any metallic particles or black plastic; both early signs of impending IMS bearing failure. A specialist will then need to get involved to repair it, so that could knock more off the price if you’re willing to risk it.

Otherwise, a full AA or RAC vehicle check should be good enough to tell you whether it’s worth a punt. We’d have a look at the MOT certificate, too, but if everything checks out, we think that this car, with a cheeky aftermarket exhaust, could be the classifieds bargain of the year. If you buy it, let us know!

I honestly think the 986 is really rather under appreciated but it could become a potential modern classic!
