Take A Sneaky Look Under The Skin Of The Mazda MX-5 RF's Fancy Folding Roof

We've all seen those cool videos of the new hard top Miata's clever roof in operation, but this animated version shows us what's happening behind the scenes

As a ‘retractable fastback’, the Mazda MX-5 RF is very much lie a mini version of the Porsche 911 Targa. The clever roof you see here can open and close in around 12 seconds at speeds of up to 6mph, and - impressively - doesn’t rob the RF of any boot space compared to the standard car.

Mazda revealed earlier this month that the MX-5 RF will start at £22,195 in the UK. Would you have one over the soft-top?

Yes i probably would have this over the soft top because
1) operating the roof on the soft top is a bit of a faff
2) you get the best of both worlds (of normal coupe and a convertible
3) more practical (bigger boot)
4) looks cool
5) where i live (Dubai) it’s really hot and I’d like a metal roof to protect me from all that heat.

Why is the soft top a faff? I mean you undo a latch, and you pull it back down, and bam, down. And you don’t really get the convertible world as much, more like a targa.

Everybody gets crazy about the MX5-RF and I’m still waiting for a Coupe.

The RF is one small step for Miata and one giant leap for Miata-kind. (Working towards the coupe)

At least the soft roof won’t rust in the future though…
