1994 Toyota Camry 2.2l 5S-FTE w/ Autronic SM4
Has some mods done to it, other than a 2.5” exhaust system and some off-brand alloys from Japan, looks stock.
Under the bonnet:
5S-FE long block recently rebuilt
S51 5-speed manual
Bolted on turbo from a Silvia (T28 ball bearing)
Log turbo manifold
315 cc injectors from a 2JZ-GE
Fuel pump from an R32
COPs from a Toyota Nadia (same as the one found in Vistas, but basically other than in legth it’s really similar to plugs from the Passo and Prius.)
These are some of the bigger mods I can think off my head. Since the stock ECU was fouling, and the car outright didn’t want to start sometimes, along with the quite frail distributor, we (me and my brother) ditched it altogether.
To run the car, we managed to find a ~10 y/o Autronic SM4 for a really good price. Meanwhile, getting rid of the stock ignitor and coil pack, we got the COPs. Running off the sensors from the distributor, we managed to make the car run. While there was some funny business with the wiring of the ECU, it’s now a streetable car, and we put a street tune on it.
Those COPs and the ECU really vitalized the turbo setup. Originally the car was running on the stock ECU with beefed up fueling system and stock ECU. Of course the entire engine was removed, overhauled and the head gasket further thickened by stacking it during the turbo install. This lowered the compression and allowed us to run 0.7 bar safer. This isn’t the optimum solution though. The cylinder head is also home ported, perhaps not the best job, but you deal with what you have here.
It has a small top mount intercooler that sits just beside the cylinder head. While the engine idles right now, it’s not the smoothest, with mild misfires. Convicts are one of the VK20 plug is beginning to fail and bad injector. Otherwise, on acceleration, it feels strong especially on the midrange. Torque is aplenty and the car picks up pace quite swiftly, considering it’s a Camry. Butt dyno tells us it’s making around 200 whp.
Planned mods for the car are of course new plugs. Currently looking at Denso IK24s. Afterwards new injectors are due, possibly looking at injectors from a WRX STI or 3S-GTE. We might pick up a tubular turbo manifold to liven up the top end. In the distant future, a 3S-GTE head swap is possible, along with a GT28 turbo.
Really satisfied with the Autronic, with the car running stronger than ever. I’d say it’s a decent sleeper that’s fun to drive with its midrange power. But of course, modification is a bottomless pit, and the future entices.
Current shots are off a phone, perhaps a proper photoshoot is on the schedule.
Somehow I managed to neglect it the first time round, but the car is still running the stock 2.2l Camry engine, i.e., the 5S-FE. With a turbo bolted on, it’s affectionately known as the 5S-FTE.

Drift car???
Well, it’s too FWD for it to be a ‘true’ drift car.
