1. Subaru Legacy wagon 3.6 Turbo (aka Supergramps)

Who can argue with a Subaru Legacy/Liberty wagon? It’s modern, comfortable, quiet, spacious and, thanks to its Garrett 35/76 turbocharged EZ36 3.6-litre engine with 371hp, this particular one is seriously fast. But the best thing, it’s a perfectly usable daily driver that looks great and has bags of character.

2. Audi RS2

Of course, the Audi RS2 had to make your final list of 7 ultimate cars. Thanks to its 311bhp, 2.2-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine and six-speed manual gearbox, the RS2 accelerates from 0-30mph in just 1.5 seconds, making it faster than the McLaren F1 road car. To get to 60mph, the super estate needs 4.8 seconds, and it’ll top out at an electronically limited 162.8mph.

Porsche took care of the RS2’s suspension - which lowered the standard 80 Avant’s ride height by 40mm - and brakes (massive, 322mm discs featured at the front with 299mm cross-drilled discs at the rear). The wheels were also Porsche’s own 7.0Jx17 ‘Cup’ rims which were wrapped in 245/40 ZR17 Dunlop tyres.

You’re probably scratching your head at the moment, and that’s allowed, because BMW did not make an E30 M3 Touring. This Touring model actually started life as a 318i onto which E30 M3 parts were bolted on from a crashed car. Unleashing more power from the engine is fairly straight forward job of swapping the car’s turbocharger and intercooler with those found in the STI version of the Impreza WRX, giving over 300bhp with relative ease.

6. Range Rover Sport

The supercharged V8 Range Rover Sport might tip the scales at 2335kg, but it’ll do 0-62mph in five seconds dead, so that’s the speed box well and truly booked.

What’s more, the Sport is the only truly capable car off-road from your list of vehicles, meaning that the end of the world won’t stop you in your tracks. The Range Rover’s air-sprung, aluminium suspension also allows for a smooth and cosseting ride, and the noise that comes from the tailpipes is simply out of this world, especially in the 543bhp SVR version.

This Merc’s 5.5-litre engine produces mammoth amounts of power (over 550bhp) and transfers all of its anger onto the tarmac through its rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic MCT gearbox. It’s a heavy old thing at almost two tonnes, but performance is crazy fast; 0-62mph takes 4.2 seconds and top speed is limited to 155mph, although a theoretical top speed of 200mph+ is plausible with the limiter removed.
