We’ve seen some low-mileage examples of rare Porsches in our time, but this one has got to be right up there with the most special. This motorsport-derived 964 911 Carrera RSR 3.8 has covered just six miles from new.

Only 51 RSRs were built, and this 1993 car for auction with RM Sothebys is one of just two with the fully-leather interior, in this case in what can only be described as very, very red. This car was apparently bought as an investment and was immediately squirrelled away into a private collection.

This left-hooker is so mechanically fresh that it still wears the factory-applied Cosmoline; a rust-inhibitor. It makes the car look like it’s been standing outside for 24 years, but underneath the treatment it should shine up beautifully.

Technically, the car is in factory-fresh condition. This is how it was delivered; in a condition appropriate for long-term storage before advancements in anti-rust technologies had matured. A 24-year-old car can’t come in more original fettle than this.

Its low, low stance hints hard at the RSR’s racing pedigree and a complete lack of suspension travel, while the massive rear wing is deliciously 1990s. Forget everything else about the car for a second and just appreciate what a masterpiece of design it is. Except for what the buyer did to the interior, obviously.

We can’t say much for the buyer’s tastes, pairing purple wheels and gold calipers with a red interior, but the class inherent in the car is beyond argument. The dry-sumped 3.8-litre engine, directly derived from Porsche motorsport programmes, put out 345bhp, but automotive media at the time estimated the figure higher than that after Car & Driver recorded a real-world 0-62mph sprint of 3.7 seconds; faster than a Ferrari F40.

On the track the RSR was an endurance racing legend, winning the Spa 24 Hours, Suzuka 1000km and 24 Hours of Interlagos, not to mention a 1-2-3-4 finish at the Daytona 24 Hours and class wins at Le Mans and Sebring.

If you want it you’ll have to bid against some of the most dedicated (and sickeningly rich) Porsche collectors in the world, who’ll probably just tuck the car away into another warehouse. A car like this, with that engine, the roll cage and the heritage, should really be driven. With so few miles covered, though, you just know that whoever buys it won’t dare to knock its value by driving it.

When I scrolled down to the interior picture, I nearly vomited a little bit. It looks like a can of red paint exploded inside.

With an interior that colour. You couldn’t pay me to drive it.
Other than that, it’s fantastic.

What’s up with all that red? It looks like they bathed the interior in red paint or something.

That inside though… It’s like throwing-up after eating a bunch of red licorice.

It’s sad to see a car driven once to its owner’s garage then later forgotten about…

I’ll pay for the car wash. That should suffice for the price.
