I love wringing out a 4age. It’s Toyota bulletproof with lots of ability. It’s in the ae86 corolla, aw11 mr2, and even the Geo metro! It’s simple, easy to work on, and a very rewarding engine. It definitely provides a good bang for buck.
Well not the fastest, but the 5gen Black Top 4AGE is one of the strongest 1.6 NA

B235R is quite good too, not very good for tuning purposes but still.

Not the best probably but the Turbo 4cyl in the Mercedes A45 AMG is right up there
Subaru 2.0 boxer turbo in impreza wrx sti before it was replaced by 2.5 litre.
Ej25, most reliable engine. Easy going. Plenty of power.
