Soon Your iPhone Won't Work While You're Driving

As part of its iOS 11 operating system, Apple is introducing a system to deactivate notifications with the hope of removing the temptation to check your phone or even type messages while driving

Apple is about to get involved with your life every time you get behind the wheel. Specifically, the company is trying to save it.

When the company releases iOS 11, users will find a new feature prompting them to activate a ‘do not disturb while driving’ mode, which will prevent any notifications appearing at all. The idea is to take away the temptation for we young ‘uns to look at our smartphones while we’re driving. To be fair, it really is a daft thing to do and it does cost lives.

If the phone owner ‘forgets’ to turn it on, the phone can guess when it’s in a moving vehicle anyway, thanks to its motion sensors, GPS and WiFi systems. Trying to ‘unlock’ the phone will be purposely difficult to do while driving, but easy if you’re an innocent passenger.

The system won’t stop you pre-connecting the phone via Bluetooth or USB, allowing you to access some of the device’s functions legally through the car.

The software can also ping a simple reply to anyone who messages the driver’s phone while they’re behind the wheel. Something along the lines of an automated “I’m driving right now and will get back to you when I get where I’m going” is thought to be the gist of it. A similar Android app to perform the same job already exists.

Developers are even working on software to sell to companies, who would then force their staff to use it. What’s your take on this? Should phone makers be taking steps to stop people using their phones while driving, and will people simply activate any override they can, no matter the danger?

And 5,000 a year choke to death. Stop making everything a bigger problem than it is because some movie star tells you to be outraged.

I love how people on comments are quick to blame “younger” people for texting and driving, yet I’ve, on countless occasions, witness and been a victim of middle aged and older people who are driving and using their phones or taking a phone call and not driving. In the past 3 days I’ve almost been hit by these middle aged people who do not look before driving so PLEASE STOP blaming people of my age. at least I use a Bluetooth and if someone texts me I do not even bother because I am trying to stay alive when driving and I know that no one is going to die if I don’t respond back immediately ,. if it was important they would call me and that is why a Bluetooth was invented. and actually it should be a law that everyone is required to have a Bluetooth and that they MUST use it.

Good! I see countless morons playing with their phones, while driving, each and every day. Seems Apple doesn’t want to be the next Takata. Now, what about all the dimwits who walk down the street, eyes glued to their phone, totally oblivious to their surroundings.
