Soon Your iPhone Won't Work While You're Driving

As part of its iOS 11 operating system, Apple is introducing a system to deactivate notifications with the hope of removing the temptation to check your phone or even type messages while driving

Apple is about to get involved with your life every time you get behind the wheel. Specifically, the company is trying to save it.

When the company releases iOS 11, users will find a new feature prompting them to activate a ‘do not disturb while driving’ mode, which will prevent any notifications appearing at all. The idea is to take away the temptation for we young ‘uns to look at our smartphones while we’re driving. To be fair, it really is a daft thing to do and it does cost lives.

If the phone owner ‘forgets’ to turn it on, the phone can guess when it’s in a moving vehicle anyway, thanks to its motion sensors, GPS and WiFi systems. Trying to ‘unlock’ the phone will be purposely difficult to do while driving, but easy if you’re an innocent passenger.

The system won’t stop you pre-connecting the phone via Bluetooth or USB, allowing you to access some of the device’s functions legally through the car.

The software can also ping a simple reply to anyone who messages the driver’s phone while they’re behind the wheel. Something along the lines of an automated “I’m driving right now and will get back to you when I get where I’m going” is thought to be the gist of it. A similar Android app to perform the same job already exists.

Developers are even working on software to sell to companies, who would then force their staff to use it. What’s your take on this? Should phone makers be taking steps to stop people using their phones while driving, and will people simply activate any override they can, no matter the danger?

It still works. You just can’t receive notifications. Doesn’t turn your phone into a brick.

It restricts Calls and Messages - Notifications. GPS and Streaming Music apps will still work.

As a Software Tester for a “Company making software to force the feature” It would be the company or school owned devices that have the restriction put on. You can’t just push the feature down to a device without an MDM server hooked up to it.

I also think it should just be mandatory, personally. Too many times there is some one being slow or dangerous and when I finally get around them they are heads down in their phone.

Honestly I think the idea is great, but the number one issue is how will it know WHO is driving?

“Trying to ‘unlock’ the phone will be purposely difficult to do while driving” It won’t. If you’re a passenger you will have to turn it off. It’ll just be easier for you to turn off since you’re not driving. But this is by far not a fix. It will make it worse. People will still text. They will still turn it off no matter how hard it is thus making it even more difficult. Texting should be done by voice command through Siri so that you don’t even have to touch your phone. Just speak and Siri will send. Yes no body should text but people still will.

This is good news, but it shouldn’t have to come to this. People should have the common sense and care about the safety of themselves, their passengers and other road users to not use their phone in the first place. Anyone who lacks that doesn’t belong on the roads.

People don’t HAVE common sense anymore.

I love seeing 100k S550’s and having the driver hold the phone on their hand.

This feature still has to get enabled manually. I’m on the beta now.

I drive a stick so it’s kinda hard to use my phone unless I’m on the highway cruising in 6th. I only use my phone for music anyway.

How many people will be mad from that? xD But also what about if you crash..? What do you have to wait a long time for a fire truck or police car to come..??? Its a good idea, but can have not good stuff happen.
