Only 500 Camaro Indy 500 Pace Car Replicas Available
Ah Spring ... and a young man's thoughts turn to ... well, racing a lot of the time. And when it comes to springtime and racing, of the biggest is THE biggest: The Indianapolis 500. As per usual, who gets to provide the pace car is a big deal.
Ah Spring ... and a young man's thoughts turn to ... well, racing a lot of the time. And when it comes to springtime and racing, of the biggest is THE biggest: The Indianapolis 500. As per usual, who gets to provide the pace car is a big deal. And also as per usual, who gets to make streetable replicas of the pace car is also a topic for conversation.
For the 2010 running of "The Greatest Spectacle in Motor Racing" (I think that's a trademark) it's Chevy's new, and very well loved Camaro that will be leading the 11 rows of three down to the yard of bricks come this Memorial Day. This is the fourth time a Camaro will lead the field.
General motors will, naturally, sell a replica of a Camaro Indianapolis 500 Pace Car. The last time Chevy offered a replica of a Camaro pace car was in 1993. This time around, and tell me this doesn't fit, Chevrolet plans to build a total of 500 pace car replicas. Up to 200 of those replicas will be made available through 187 of the top-selling Camaro dealers based on 2009 retail sales.
The replica is based on the Camaro 2SS model. Chevy uses the RS appearance package and have thoughtfully put in a 400HP V8 under the bonnet and paired it to a six-speed automatic transmission.
The pace car replica comes any color you want, so long as it's 'Inferno Orange' with full body white pearl decal rally stripes. The car also comes with 20-inch polished aluminum wheels, an Inferno Orange heritage front grille and engine cover, special floor mats with accent colors and 2010 Indianapolis 500 event logos on the front fenders, the door panels and embroidered on driver and passenger headrests.
"We set out to build a collectible vehicle that will appeal to the die-hard Camaro and Indianapolis 500 fan. We believe we've done just that with the 2010 Chevy Camaro Indianapolis 500 Pace Car Limited Edition," said Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President, Chevrolet Marketing.
Price? GM says the manufacturer suggested retail of the Camaro pace car replica will be $41,950, which includes $850 Destination Freight Charge.
