A Non-Limited, 'Purist' 911 Is Set To Join The Regular Range
Even with the arrival of the new Porsche 911 GT3 and its manual gearbox option, the R remains the purest of Stuttgart’s modern, rear-engined sports cars. It’s hard to argue with the recipe: take the 911 GT3 RS, remove all the hardcore aero gubbins, fit slightly narrower tyres and hook the 4.0-litre flat-six up to the kind of gearbox that has a stick shift and three pedals. What could be better?
The trouble is, Porsche only made 991 of them, and as a consequence, the cheapest used one we can find is nearly £400,000. However, there might be a new ‘purist’ 911 on the way, joining the regular 911 line-up. Yep, that means no limited to the production numbers, and no tricky waiting list to break into.
Talking to Autocar at the reveal for the new Cayenne, Porsche’s R&D head Michael Steiner said that there is “potential for more purist versions of sports cars with no limitation [on production].”
Referring to the 911 R, he said: “What we learned is that there are more and more customers who enjoy pure, fun-to-drive sports cars…For pure sports cars, there’s no need for limitation.”
So far, so vague, but a simpler, more driver-focused 911 has the potential to be brilliant, particularly when even the humble Carrera range is becoming ever more stuffed with technology.
Steiner didn’t offer up any further details on how such a car might shape up, nor did he say whether it’d be part of the current ‘991.2’ range, or the next 911 generation. So, we’re now going to hand this over to you to engage in some healthy speculation in the comments…

Porsche, you the real MVP. 😢👏👏
People who have a 911R are now pissed because this will mean their car will drop in value
And nobody will care for those people because if they bought a 911R for making profit on reselling it later, they did not buy it for the right reasons.
It will not drop significant value. The 911R is quite different from other Porsches, very mechanical. And the fact that it’s a limited edition itself will raise the value. People like knowing that they have something special, even if it’s not true. And like it’s said below, if you bought a car solely to make money, I will not feel bad for you if the 911R does indeed drop. It sits around $410K here, I expect it to drop to $280K max within 2 years, and then it will start going back up.
So a 911 not R?
R’r…
Maybe they’ll call it carrera RS?
Yes Porsche, yes…
Please Porsche, make this 911 a naturally aspirated one
Purist means … Bring air cooled back?
Don’t be silly.
911R values dropping as we speak…
It’s limited, so not really
Let’s hope it’ll be NA
So let me get this straight, The 911 R was “the last manual”, then the GT3 had a manual option, then the GT3 RS had an option to have a manual and no aero, now yet another manual??? Glad I didn’t buy an R
Porsche never said this it’s just people on the internet who suffer from a pessimistic view of the future or maybe they just want the prices to go up. First of all the 997 GT3 RS 4.0 was said to be the last naturally aspirated 911 (Salomondrin I kept saying it when even I knew about the R), then came R and took the crown (he said that $hit until he couldn’t deny the GT3 will be getting a manual). Porsche did say if the Reader does well they might make a none limited version, but people kept flipping then. I guess Porsche got really pissed (I read that Andreas Preuninger talked about plans to work against the flippers after calling them out on their whining about the GT3 getting a manual) and decided to screw them over with a non limited version of that baby.
You can buy a manual on the 911 GTS. This is to my opinion the pure 911
I hope its naturally aspirated.
