$49,900. That's what it will cost you for the 150-mile range Tesla Model S after governmental tax credits of $7,500. Clever keeping the price under the elusive $50,000 psychological barrier.
Before tax breaks, that comes in at $57,400. No doubt Tesla has been heavily banking on that $7,500 credit, which also applies to vehicles like GM's Chevrolet Volt. A centerpiece of the Model S project was an asking price at or near $50,000 for the base model.
So this is a big win for them, and at that price the Model S looks to be a fantastic deal! $50,000 for a fully-featured 4-door electric sedan with 150 miles in range is an impressive feat.
In addition, I expect a lot of Tesla's well-heeled celebrity buyers will opt for the more expensive, 300-mile range battery packs as well.
The Model S will be available in two continents from the outset, North America and Europe, with sales being divided between the two. Asian launch will come later. Expect to hear more about and Tesla's international plans at the launch.
In other news, Telsa will be branching out to the Canadian market, furthering availability around the world and helping to continue sales momentum. It's an accomplishment being able to offer an electric vehicle in a predominantly cold climate like Canada.
Pricing is yet to be announced for Canada, and pricing will "reflect exchange rates at the time". It shouldn't be too much different from the U.S figure, and I expect Tesla will get a nice order bump from the market entrance, further extending the Roadster's waiting list.
I'm getting excited about the Model S's launch, which is just around the corner. In what should be a defining defining moment for Tesla, the launch party takes place at the design studio inside the Space X Rocket Factory in Hawthorne, California.
A fitting "launch site" huh? We might see some picture and detail leaks before then, but until then we'll just have to wait and see Stay tuned for details and commentary on the Model S when it's unveiled next week!
