Mazda Introduces MX-5 Miyako Special Edition for the UK Only

Special editions are often introduced to commemorate model milestones or occasions. Sometimes, they are introduced for no real reason at all, merely for those wanting something a bit different from the norm. The MX-5 Miyako fits into this category.

Special editions are often introduced to commemorate model milestones or occasions. Sometimes, they are introduced for no real reason at all, merely for those wanting something a bit different from the norm. The MX-5 Miyako fits into this category.

Whilst many special edition models get upgraded engines or significant differentiation in exterior appearance, Mazda has taken a decidedly low-key tack with the Miyako. There are two models, the 1.8i Miyako and 2.0i Miyako, offered in soft-top and retractable hard top forms.

Exterior changes consist of standard front fog lamps, larger 17” wheels, and special paint schemes. There is your choice of Aluminum Silver Metallic or Velocity Red Mica paint. The 2.0i Miyako soft-top model adds a power-folding roof.

Inside, both models get black Medici perforated leather with red accents and stitching, along with special floormats and standard climate control. There is also unique Miyako badging.

Behind the scenes, the only change is a new front suspension strut that is designed to improve handling. The 1.8i Miyako makes 124 horsepower, and the 2.0i 157 hp.

Some believe that the Miyako was named after an island in Japan, Miyako-jima, that is popular with vacationers. Others believe that the Japanese car manufacturer Mazda travelled around the world's top Universities searching for students with mysterious names, and that they stumbled across one Miss Tateishi studying at UCL.

Whichever story you believe, the special edition models are available in the United Kingdom only, where they have been on sale since July 1st. A limited run of 500 MX-5 Miyako models will be produced, starting at £18,385 for the 1.8i Miyako and £20,885 for the 2.0i Miyako. And that's a whole lot of money for not a great deal of Miyako.
