GM Boosts Camaro Production

A glimmer of hope in a downpour of bad news? Maybe. At least there is one vehicle that GM can't build enough of; the new Chevrolet Camaro. The car promised to be a hot-seller judging by it's wide fan base and early expressions of interest, and it's proving to be just that.

A glimmer of hope in a downpour of bad news? Maybe. At least there is one vehicle that GM can't build enough of; the new Chevrolet Camaro. The car promised to be a hot-seller judging by it's wide fan base and early expressions of interest, and it's proving to be just that.

Plant closures, job cuts, wage reductions. Amid all of that comes one hot selling GM vehicle. GM says it is having a difficult time keeping up with demand for the Camaro, which went on sale last month. Chevrolet dealers sold 614 Camaros last month, and over 15,000 orders have yet to be filled.

Pretty strong demand I would say! The car seems to have widespread appeal across market demographics. Who doesn't like the Camaro? The sales numbers probably have a lot to do with the excellent value proposition the car makes, as well as impressive fuel economy numbers for the V6 model.

I would love to do a test drive on one! While I was sick of hearing about the car for so long before it actually went on sale, I'm excited about checking one out in person now. There is just something cool about a new Camaro that you can't quite replicate.

Bottom line is, sales have been so strong that GM announced on Wedensday that it is boosting production at the Camaro's Oshawa, Ontario plant. To do that they have added a week of production (whatever that means) and plant workers will go on overtime. I'm sure that is welcome news for the plant's workers, and for Chevrolet dealers everywhere.

I hope that Chevrolet can keep up demand for the car and that it won't be just a short-lived fad. Maybe just maybe it can find a successful market niche selling an affordable 2-door RWD coupe to the tune of around 100,000 units a year. For the sake of the Camaro's future, let's hope it does!
