This Ford Fiesta Hit A Pothole So Hard It Ripped A Whole Axle Off

We all hit potholes, pretty much every time we drive anywhere these days, but this one was so bad it tore the rear axle off completely

You haven’t hit a proper pothole until it rips an axle out and writes the whole car off.

That’s exactly what happened to Daisy Boxall’s fifth-generation Ford Fiesta when it fatally dropped a wheel into a deep hole in the English seaside town of Bognor.

Daisy and a friend were in the car when it hit the Felpham Way pothole last week. Evidently the stress was too much for the rear axle to take; the force of the impact ripped it away from its mountings like an unwanted gherkin from the top of a burger. She said:

“I was going into town to visit friends. On approach to the bend I slowed, went down the pothole, and then all of a sudden it was like the wind took the car and we were spinning in the road, scraping along.

“It came to a stop, and me and my friend Leah got out and saw the damage that had been done to the car.

“I just thought ‘It’s going to be pricey’ and then realised that no, it’s a total write-off. It was quite shocking – going from just driving along the road to being on the other side of the road with no back wheels.”

We can imagine.

Although the pictures don’t really show how deep and dangerous the hole was (before West Sussex County Council repaired it about 90 minutes afterwards), it must have been a really bad one to cause that much damage. Either that or the Fiesta was even rustier than Phil the MX-5..

Something tells me that the axle shouldn’t have come off that easily…The picture seems to suggest it’s not all that deep, but then again we can’t be too sure!

While I know some roads are very poorly maintained in the UK, I think this unfortunate lady’s car bore Phil’s level of rust on the underside…1 huge pothole isn’t going to separate a car from an axle just like that.
But potholes still are a huge farce. I live in Sheffield (north of England for the non-Brits) and in 6 months my old Bora went through 3 flat tyres and 2 rear suspension bushings… because of rubbish road surfaces!

If this small pothole did so much damage. It was the best thing what could happened to the driver. Because there had to be something wrong with the car.
