An Electric Hummer With 1000bhp Is Officially On The Way

The Hummer is making a comeback, but it’ll be a very different vehicle from the old version. Originally released as a hilariously impractical civilian version of the Humvee military vehicle before being diluted into the cynical H2 and then the smaller H3, GMC is giving the Hummer an all-electric makeover.

Confirming rumours which have been circulating automotive media for a while now, GMC announced that the vehicle - officially christened as the ‘GMC Hummer EV’ - will be fully revealed on 20 May 2020.

As is the norm for a new, premium electric vehicle, the Hummer will pack some serious figures. It’ll be good for 986bhp (1000hp), and a 0-60mph time of three seconds dead. 11,500lb ft is quoted as the torque figure, although before you get excited, this will be torque at the wheels rather than at the engine. Even if that’s - rather sneakily - not specified in the press release.

The GMC Hummer EV - which will be built at the GM Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant - has been teased via a single image (top of page) and an advert (above), the latter of which will air during the Super Bowl. Expect to be hearing much more about the vehicle in the coming months.

It’s unclear if the new Hummer will make it to the UK. The last one - the H3 - was sold on our shores in right-hand drive, a decision which resulted in…only a handful being sold. So far as we can work out, around 200 were sold, less than 100 of which are still registered for use on UK roads.

This is just disappointing.

Why are you disappointed? Did you seriously have expectations?

An all electric HUMMER is not a HUMMER.

And why is that? Because it wasn’t electric when it launched? Going by that logic, any electric car is not a real car because Carl Benz put a petrol engine in the first ever car.

Wowie. That’s something. 😮
1000HP and 15600Nm torque.

That would be enough torque not to restart a dead planet, but thats enough torque to restart a dead universe!

The torque figure is probably at the wheels

why are you making it sound like the torque figure being at the wheels is bad, that means the torque at the engine is even more which is good?

01/30/2020 - 20:43 |

No because they achieve that toque number by gear ratios not sheer power at the motor(s]

01/30/2020 - 23:28 |

It does not. Through gearing, torque at the wheels is excessively higher than at the engine. Same thing happened with the Tesla roadster, they stated it had 10000+ nm of torque and everyone went crazy, until the Porsche taycan came around with over 11000. This is not actual torque and because we don’t know the final gearing of the hummer, the number is actually completely meaningless.

Torque would be useful off-roading
