Ford mainly was there to to talk up existing products and brief the media on its plans for the future.
Automobile magazine participated in a Question and Answer session with Derrick Kuzak, head of global product development, as well as chief technology officer Paul Mascarenas and Chief Executive officer Alan Mulally.
During the session, the question came up about a new supercar, in the mould of the mid-engined Ford GT. The Ford GT was produced between 2005 and 2006 as a retro-styled successor to the original Ford GT40 supercar from the 1960's.
As expected, there was no confirmation of a new model. The idea of a confirmation regarding a high-profile new supercar from a mainstream manufacturer like Ford is a long shot.
What wasn't there however, was a denial. Instead, after a pause Kuzak stated: "Well I think there are certain things that we don’t want to talk about in terms of four-year product plans, if that’s okay.”
Sounds like a hint to us - and it is certainly leaving the door open. With Ford reaching its goals for profitability and gaining serious traction in the marketplace, introducing a new halo supercar could be something in the cards for the future.
Most likely we think a potential model would be unrelated to the GT. There is a lot of possibilities - such as a performance hybrid drivetrain similar to the Porsche 918 Spyder. Regardless, we can only hope something is in the works.
