Citroen Metropolis Concept Surfaces

Ah, French automakers. Got to love them! The land of Bugatti (no, it isn't Italian) is also home to Citroen and Peugeot, two of the quirkiest automakers around.

Who could forget the iconic 2CV or DS, the moniker of which is now being brought back for a lineup of new cars.

One thing that Citroen has never really been known for is large cars. But there is a first time for everything, right? In that case, that would be with the Metropolis.

The Metropolis is the first car to be designed by PSA Group’s Shanghai design studio. It looks the part of a large luxury sedan, while still remaining uniquely Citroen.

If you're going to do something, do it right - and Citroen is going all out with the Metropolis. The Metropolis stands at 5.3 meters (17.4 feet) long and 2 meters (6.5 feet) longer than an extended Mercedes S-Class and wider than a Maybach. The car is huge, and it looks it.

As is a near-prerequisite for all concepts lately, the Metropolis has a hybrid drivetrain. It starts off with a 2.0-liter V6 (that is a small displacement V-6) that, combined with an electric motor, has a power output of 272 horsepower.

Interestingly, there is also boost function that brings power up to 460 horsepower. That power is delivered through an all-wheel drive system and through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

This is just a concept for now, we don't have any indication about production intent. Under normal circumstances, we would say the car a total one-off. However, looking at its debut location, China, at the Shanghai Expo could be the key. The Chinese market has become Citroen's second-largest market.

The country, with rich businessman that like to be driven around (unlike the United States), is the preferred place where large luxury vehicles are released. Cars like the Buick Park Avenue and Cadillac SLS are country-specific.

Also, new introductions slated for the show include the BMW long-wheelbase 5 Series, updated Volkswagen Phaeton, and as we've already seen, the Audi A8 L. Time will tell, but for certain this is a very intriguing concept. Expect the official press release and images to be released soon.
