The Carbonfibre CR-1 Could Actually Convert Us To Caravaning
Like most petrolheads, we're really not fans of caravans. There's nothing worse than having a spirited drive on your favourite windy road ruined by one of those fibreglass boxes of misery cruising along below the speed limit. The CR-1 from Global Caravan Technologies, however, is a different story. Aside from being the sexiest tow caravan we've ever laid eyes on, it's also technologically advanced, being constructed from carbonfibre.
That makes this thing light. Despite being over 10 metres long, it tips the scales at 2700kg, about half what a similar length caravan would normally weigh. That helps improve fuel economy when towing by anything from 100 to 150 per cent, according to the CR-1's makers. That construction also makes it a lot stronger than the relatively flimsy conventional caravans we're used to seeing.
Inside, it's as opulent as you'd expect, being festooned in luxury fittings and finishes. Apparently, the design team included engineers from the likes of IndyCar, Formula One, and even Nasa. Even taking the Nasa connection into account, we think the likening of the project to the Apollo space programme in the overly-bombastic unveiling video below was perhaps a bit much.
As you'd expect, none of this comes cheap. Prices start at $170,000 (£101,000) for the 'entry-level' models, while a fully-loaded, customised example will cost you in excess of $800,000 (£479,000). We'll stick to hotels, thanks...
