Introductions from the Beijing Auto Show are officially over. The biggest debut at the show in terms of future importance was no doubt the BMW Concept Gran Coupe.
A stunning vehicle, it marked the first serious sign of entry for BMW into the four door "coupe" segment Mercedes-Benz popularized with the CLS.
The concept appeared remarkably production ready and devoid of concept detailing. It looks like there could be a reason for that, with some official statements from BMW.
Autocarhas the scoop, quoting BMW design head Adrian van Hooydonk saying: “It’s true that the Gran Coupe points to a specific model, a saloon with the presence and elegance of a 7-Series but a more dynamic, sporty character: much more of a driver’s car.” Then, the kicker: “We’re convinced that we should make a car like this.”
You'll remember that while the Gran Coupe is the first recent thing we've heard from BMW about entrance into this segment, the Concept CS in 2007 was a four door "coupe".
That car, however, was far more of a concept in design than the Gran Coupe. BMW was reportedly working on bringing it to fruition but the project got shelved. Who wants to guess this one will have a different fate?
