10 Highlights From Last Weekend’s Motorsport Action
This camera angle has to be one of the best in F1, as drivers exit the Ascari chicane at Monza during the Italian Grand Prix. Pwoar.
2. Throwback
Because the Southern 500 took place on Labour Day, the Nascar Sprint Cup race at Darlington featured a whole host of throwback liveries. Which is your favourite?
Carl Edwards came from falling two laps down early on in the Nascar Sprint Cup race at Darlington Raceway to snatch the lead from Brad Keselowski in the closing stages, storming to his second win of the season. Keselowski had to settle for second, with Denny Hamlin third.
4. Three different winners
The British Touring Car Championship was at Rockingham last weekend, with three different winners – Matt Jackson was triumphant in race one, Gordon Shedden won race two and Jason Plato took victory in a chaotic race three. It was classic BTCC mayhem on Sunday.
A support event to the BTCC was the Super Touring Car Championship, with old cars – including some beauties from the late 1990s – racing around the tricky track. Listen to that noise!
The FIA World Rallycross Championship was back last weekend, with the Bretagne World RX of France. Record crowds watched Timmy Hansen take victory in the final, to extend his championship lead.
The Nascar Xfinity series was also at Darlington, with Denny Hamlin getting past Daniel Suarez with three to go to take victory. Kyle Busch was second and Suarez third, making it a Toyota 1-2-3.
With long straights and heavy braking zones, there was quite a bit of chaos in the GP2 races at the Monza circuit. Meindert van Buuren didn’t make the best impression on his debut in the series with this lap one crash…
Alex Lynn and Sergey Sirotkin collided during the opening GP2 race, won by Alexander Rossi, and the former got some impressive air. Mitch Evans won the second race, while in GP3 Emil Bernstorff and Marvin Kirchhofer took the victories.
The Blancpain Sprint Series was in action at the Portimao circuit in the Algarve. Vincent Abril and Maximilian Buhk led the first half before a Safety Car had to remove a drain cover, and a pit delay cost them. Laurens Vanthoor and Robin Frijns took advantage and claimed another win, extending their championship lead.
