Totally agree, not about all german cars, but about vw. Totally overpriced, parts are expensive and the build quaility is nowhere near everyone says it is
I don’t know about your country but here in mine you can find parts on gas stations for vw though.
It depends on what VW you drive. As long it has no cam chain (a lot of VWs had them between 2008-2013) and a supercharger, they can be pretty reliable. Comparing my 2006 Polo and the 2010 Swift of my sister, the Polo got far more better rust provision. workmanship is pretty good IMO. part prices are okay in germany, since there are a lot of VWs here and the market has various offerings. What is more questionable for me is the service and the costs of a VW licensed garage, at least from my experiences.
Nah that’s a load of bullcrap. We had Opels in the past, then a Volvo and then we got a VW. Since then my parents always bought VW’s because of how reliable they are.
I now also drive a VW daily, I was actually looking at a BMW but I got a VW passat from my aunt. And I am very happy with it, runs perfectly, starts ALWAYS, doesn’t use a lot of fuel, everything still works after 20 years, no corrosion though it has always been outisde. There’s not a single bad thing about that car.
My parents have a newer Transporter, I know a few people who drive new Golfs and have driven a lot in each of the 3 previous generations of Polo. Never felt anything wrong. Our Transporter has over 300.000KM on the clock now, but still working perfectly.
I won’t comment on the quality of other German brands, because I don’t have experience with them but I can say from experience that VW’s are not bad.
But I understand your views on VW. I’ve traveled through Croatia from Zagreb to Omis near Split and the amount of Golf mk2 and mk3 I have seen there is just beyond belief. And all were in a very bad state, the kind of cars we sell in Western Europe for export because they’re actually at the end of their lives. The reason you have so many of those in your country is because of the poverty I think, because you’re still recovering from the war. So your image of VW is probably influenced by this I think :)
Well the thing you say about VW’s in Croatia is very true. But the thing is people here praise everything German, including VW. VW’s are now looked at as a status symbol and dealers and mechanics take advantage. People here would rather drive a base model VW just to have braging rights that it’s German.
You are entitled to your opinion, just as much as I am entitled to tell you, that you are wrong. As a mechanic I have to tell you that german cars are some of the cheapest to maintain and run. Also they don’t break down, typically they will always be able to drive to the shop to get something fixed, rather than arriving on a the back of a truck. If you are looking for a bad car, look no further than Italy, France or America.
This is a story that litteraly every mechanic says here where I live, yet in front of every shop 6 out of 10 cars are german
Quite the same thoughts that i have. I’d say german cars are all in all reliable (there are always exceptions, of course), but korean and japanese cars might have the highest reputation here in germany, when it comes to reliability.
Quality of french and italian cars driven by friends seems to be refutable, tho..
Please watch out before you hit throttle
As a mk4 gti vr6 owner i think a lot of hate comes from vw understating their car’s preformance, and the owner overstating it. When i started a new job a few months ago the one manager wanted to race me in his v6 mustang. There is no way in hell that a mk4 will beat a mustang or most other sports cars. I could have been the “typical” vw owner and bragged my car up but i knew what it was. Volkswagen pretty much means car for the people and they make some of the best all around cars today. Sure they sacrifice performance to accomplish that but i don’t mind it. My interior is almost perfect for being 15 years old and at 158k miles.
Also you cant hate on the vr6’s exhaust note. It is beautiful. Edit: The only vw i can think of that has questionable reliability is the corrado, but that is another story.
I’m not talking about performance, but these cars (German) are so Overrated. Everybody say they are the best car. I qoute: “I bet Audi RS6 could kill Lamborghini Aventador. It’s the best car.” I’m not even joking.
20 - 30 years ago German cars was way better than everybody else, today however, it’s not the same. BMW and Mercedes seems to have survived pretty well, Audi and VW on the other hand…
No no, VAG, and BMW have survived, Mercedes on the other hand… They’re very nice cars but you need a lot of money to own one because they always brake down. My neighbour has one and it constantly has problems. His son however has an older Merc and that one never has problems.
TO BE FAIR. German cars are very overrated in my country. But, except normal BMW fans, there is a huge VW fandom, that is really dumb. One of my friends has Passat CC, and he’s always saying that it drove 250 km/h (155 MP/h) on the turns (forgot the word. I think it is something like Shikanes or something.) Or once he said that Audi RS6 would destroy Lamborghini Aventador in race. That is mentality in my country. And there is no enough of us that like cars like Subarus, or any Japanese cars, because they are bad, and slow and any Golf would destroy it. I’m not joking.
Couldn’t disagree with you more. My family have owned 6 VW’s over the last 10 years and currently still have 3. VW’s 1.9 engine especially is one of the greatest ever built. My dads 2001 Mk4 Golf GT TDI has 199,000 miles and it is still running brilliantly. It hasn’t had any real work done to it over the years besides a few standard services like any other car of that age would have. Volkswagen’s 2.0 litre engine however isn’t anywhere near as good as the 1.9 although i’d still choose it before any french, italian or British car (of the same value obviously). The only common fault I see with VW’s is that there gearboxes dont seem to be as good as they can (gearbox went on our 2005 VW Caddy 2.0, although it was 9 years old at that point) be but im sure vw know that and are/have working on that. All-in-all though if i was buying a day to day car I’d buy any German car (VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Mercedes, BMW) before any other countries car, although id be happy to make an exception if i was buying a track car/project/car for fun

Why do you think that?
They are soooo Overrated.
