Maybe it's a stupid question but, is the middle exhaust pipe of a Ferrari 458 Italia really connected to the engine?

Because in several video’s you can see that there are flames only coming out of the outermost two exhausttips. And is that also the reason for the middle one being a little bit smaller than the other two?

The middle one is a throwback to the F40 where it was connected to the wastegates (i think?) while the outer ones came from the turbos. On the 458 the exhaust is valved, so you can have both queit and loud sound. The middle exhaust is the quiet one coming from the mufflers, while the outer ones are only flowing when the valves open. This means that at high RPM (Ferrari exhaust open the valves not with a switch or load, but at a specific RPM) only the outer exhaust tips are used, while theres only flow though the inner tip at lower RPM .
