Hello guys! I was curious about the fourth generation of the Ford Mustang since I've been interested in getting one. I was thinking mostly engine-wise like how reliable they are? Is the 4.6L good/bad in general and in tuning?
i would like to know that too, would you recommend this mustang or the previous generation or a foxbody?
There are two real differences between the older (SN-95) mustangs and the New Edge mustangs - those are the body style (same frame, same power train, same interior, etc) and the heads on the motor. The New Edge got a power upgrade via the PI (Power Improved) heads, increasing crank power output from 215hp to 261hp. I love my car to death, but the fox body is a drag strip monster. The aftermarket for all of these cars is unparalleled, so you really can’t go wrong with them.
i have a foxbody, and from what i understand, the engine is easier and cheaper to make power from, but once you start to break 500+/- HP, the stock block is known for splitting down the middle, and it all depends on what you want from it, straight line? amazing car, wanna corner, it doesn’t take long for the engine to overpower the quite flexible chassis, and the disc front, drum rear brakes don’t stop all that well, and fade quickly, even for daily driving, my car takes a lot of effort to stop from normal speeds. i’m planning to build mine for drift so currently all my attention is going towards the steering, as it has an amazing lack of steering angle but that’s a cheap-ish fix to do. chassis wise, the SN95 and foxbody are built on a nearly identical chassis, but the SN95 has 4 wheel discs, and i believe more steering lock. if you want the best of both worlds without having to modify, look for a 1994-1995 mustang GT, as they came with the 302 V8, but with the perks of the SN95
Having owned mine for a few years, here is the run-down:
These cars are 10 to 15 years old now and they had plastic parts in them. Case in point, the plastic intake manifold has issues with cracking. Expect to replace it if it hasn’t already been replaced. Expect nickel-and-dime type replacement stuff pretty often.
As for general reliability, it’s OK. I’ve had to self diagnose a few things, such as a hanging idle between shifts (dirty idle air control valve - $6 can of carb cleaner), starts then bogs down and dies (bad MAF sensor), etc. The engine itself is dead reliable - used in taxis and police interceptors for decades, ran well into the 250-300k mileage range with proper maintenance.
On the front of tuning, this may be a total bummer. This car makes 260 from the factory floor, maybe 210 to the wheels through the 5-speed manual. With a cold air intake, headers, an underdrive pulley, a cam, and a tune - expect to still make less than 300 rear wheel horses. To make any real power out of the 2v 4.6 you need to add forced induction - no two ways about it. It’s great value, and will handle huge amounts of power if you put 10k into forged internals and boost - but there really is no middle ground unless you want to risk using nitrous oxide.
Anyway, I hope this helps. If anyone feels differently, let me know! I want to learn as well :)
im trying to decide what car to but next would you recommend a mustang(foxbody and never) or an audi(a4,tt)? looking to spend around 5000$
