5 Reasons why Mid-Engined Hatchbacks are awesome

1. Rally History
A sh*t load of rally cars are rear-mid engined, as this gives 50/50 weight distribution and helps with the handling and accuracy of a Rally car. This is obviously necessary when navigating up and down tight dirt tracks and the like.

2. Aestetics
Like huge wheel arches, air vents and ridiculous rear wings? Then you’ll love cars like the Renault 5 Turbo, Peugeot 208 T16, Renault Clio V6, etc. I highly suggest you look these cars up, as you’ll know what I’m talking about immediately.

3. The engine is behind you!*
Imagine having the same feeling you get in any RM Supercar, of having immense power a few centimetres behind your head, in a run of the mill hatchback! Pretty cool, yes?

4. They’re cheap!
While you might have to drop a lot of cash for a rally spec Peugeot or something like that, a Renault Clio V6 can be as cheap as £20,000 for a Phase 1 model with less than 40,000 miles on the clock. The price of an average, boring hatchback for a crazy fast mid engined sports car. How’s that for good value?

5. You can thoeretically make one yourself!
Bored of your car? Pop the engine in the back! It’s complicated, and you’ll have to reinforce the car and the like, but if you persevere you can have a mid engined hatchback for a cheap price! RM layout is good for anyone getting into rallying or racing, as it gives easy access to the engine, better weight distribution and more space to upgrade the engine!
